20 Best Foreign Movies Of 2016
3. Toni Erdmann
After being selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at its Cannes
premiere this year, Toni Erdmann swept the board at the European Film Awards
winning Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenwriter, Best Actor, and Best
Actress. Currently a contender on the Academy Awards shortlist for Best Foreign
Language Film, it looks like the movie could repeat its award-winning success
across the pond too.
The comedy-drama tells the story of an aging hippy father, Winfried (hilariously played by veteran Austrian actor Peter Simonischek) and his attempts to reconnect with his estranged, work obsessed daughter Ines (Sandra Hüller) through a series of mortifyingly funny pranks and impersonations. An amusing but beautifully poignant tale of a father-daughter dynamic, it’s the latest film to join the critically acclaimed oeuvre of German director Maren Ade.
