17. The Measure Of A Man

Tale Of Tales
Diaphana Distribution

French director Stéphane Brizé’s Palme d’Or nominated film The Measure of a Man is the sad but satirical study of a middle-aged man, Thierry (Vincent Lindon), laid off from his long-time job and the bureaucratic fences he is forced to jump to find new employment. His situation is complicated by the fact he has a wife and disabled son relying on him, but after facing humiliation after humiliation in the form of condescending Skype interviews and pointless training courses, he eventually finds employment as a supermarket security guard only to realise he’s been hired basically to spy on his own colleagues.

It’s a far more low-key affair than similarly themed films like the acclaimed I, Daniel Blake, but nevertheless effective and bolstered by a wonderful performance from Lindon who scooped the award for Best Actor at Cannes in 2015 for his role.
