13. April And The Extraordinary World
A must-see for older fans of animation, April and the Extraordinary World is steampunk sci-fi brought to you from the same minds behind the award-winning 2007 animated biopic Persepolis, and inspired by the acclaimed graphic novels of French comic book artist Jacques Tardi. Set in an alternate history in which the mysterious disappearance of leading scientists before they made their greatest discoveries has led to the world being dependent on steam power and the depletion of all Europe’s woodlands, the film follows teenage scientist April (voiced by Marion Cotillard) and her talking cat Darwin as they try to solve the mystery.
Though its style of animation might be reminiscent of Hergé’s more kid-oriented Adventures of Tintin, it’s definitely an animation for adults with an ambitious and intricately woven plot and an important message about environmentalism. Not to mention, it’s absolutely gorgeous to look at.
