12. The Clan

Tale Of Tales
20th Century Fox

If recent films like Juan José Campanella’s Oscar-winning The Secret in Their Eyes and Damián Szifron’s critically acclaimed black comedy anthology Wild Tales are anything to go by, it seems Argentine cinema is getting better and better. The latest to join the ranks is Pablo Trapero’s The Clan, a true crime saga about Argentine crime family the Puccios.

On the surface, the Puccios were a seemingly normal middle-class Buenos Aires family but after falling on hard times patriarch Arquímedes decided to turn to a life of crime and with the help of his sons committed several kidnappings and murders of prominent, wealthy locals. Brutal but often darkly funny, the film features a poppy soundtrack that jars wonderfully with its more violent moments. It took its homeland by storm, boasting the largest opening weekend in the history of Argentine cinema.
