Kristin Scott Thomas gives the performance of her career in this tender, devastating mystery drama about a woman, Juliette Fontaine (Thomas), who is released back into society after spending 15 years in prison. Over the course of the movie, the nature of the crime, its victim and her motive is slowly explained, and with his matter-of-fact approach, director Philippe Claudel holds viewers in his grip for the entirety it takes for this enigma to unravel. Thomas gives a portrayal of such quiet, dignified anguish, one which should certainly have been Oscar nominated, and though some have argued that the resolution feels a little too clean, it does little to diminish the overwhelming power of this initially disturbing, deeply tragic family drama.
