An utter phenomenon upon its release in 2011, The Intouchables has the honour of being the highest-grossing French film in history as well as the highest-grossing foreign film ever. Revolving around a cranky, aristocratic quadriplegic (Francois Cluzet) and the young man (Omar Sy) from the projects he enlists to be his carer, The Intouchables is a sweet movie about an unlikely friendship which isn't afraid to crack jokes about the obstacles people face in life, but never insults its subject. This is a fine example of sentimental material done well: the two central performances are excellent, and the movie juggles its earnest tone with just enough edge, which pretty much explains why such a wide audience connected with it. If you know someone who is averse to foreign films, this is a great one to break them in.
