Leos Carax's immensely surreal drama follows Mr. Oscar (Denis Lavant), a man who, for ambiguous reasons, spends his day driving around in a limousine playing numerous "roles", such as an accordion-playing maniac named Monsieur Merde, and even an assassin. Trying to make much sense of the movie will prove fruitless for most, but the sheer experience is hilarious and like nothing else you'll ever see. Some have interpreted Holy Motors as a commentary on filmmaking itself, and that seems like the most appropriate of all the major theories. Even viewed on its own without an attempt to fully understand it, however, Lavant gives an exceptional performance, and bit-parts by Eva Mendes and Kylie Minogue are very memorable. Again, not for everyone, but a masterful film nevertheless.
