20 Best French Films Of The Last Decade

15. Rust & Bone

Jacques Audiard's tender, honest drama about an unemployed, angry young man, Ali (Matthias Schoenaerts), who falls in love with a recently paraplegic killer whale trainer, Stephanie (Marion Cotillard), is a remarkable film, wringing emotion out of its tortured characters without ever resorting to overt sentiment. What's perhaps most memorable about the movie is the absolutely stunning visual effects work: Audiard refuses to shy away from Stephanie's affliction, resulting in a number of technically mind-boggling glimpses of the actress cut-off below the knee. Though the budding romance is central to the plot, Rust and Bone is ultimately about two damaged people finally able to deal with their difficult lots in life, and it's terrific to behold, largely thanks to the excellent performances.
