20 Best French Films Of The Last Decade

13. Inside

The French New Wave of Horror has been a welcome land of refuge for any gorehound sick and tired of the generic tripe Hollywood seems to trot out these days, and one of the movement's most memorable efforts is this intensely disturbing allegory for maternal discontent. After a pregnant woman, Sarah (Alysson Paradis), loses her husband in a car accident, she finds herself being stalked by a shady woman (BĂ©atrice Dalle) who wishes to take her child for herself, leading to an ultimate violent altercation which is simply impossible to forget. Imbued with stomach-knotting tension throughout and leading to one of the most nauseatingly brutal finales of any horror film from the last decade, Inside sticks true to its guns to its final moments, and is possibly the quintessential example of modern French horror.
