4. The Amusement Park

The Night House
Shudder

If we're again getting technical about things, then George A. Romero's "lost" film The Amusement Park is actually almost 50 years old, having been shot in 1973 and premiered in 1975.

Sometime after its premiere, however, the film disappeared from public view and was considered lost to time, until a 16mm print materialised in 2017, which was given a 4K restoration and released on Shudder last year.

For fans still mourning Romero's 2017 passing, this was a poignant, belated gem of a final film from the horror maestro.

Initially shot as an educational film about elder abuse and ageism, the client ultimately felt it was too edgy and extreme to be of much use, with Romero unsurprisingly lending his darkly satirical touch to proceedings.

A 54-minute nightmare, Romero's film chronicles the increasingly troubling abuses and terror encountered by an elderly man (Lincoln Maazel) during a day out at an amusement park.

Between Maazel's sympathetic performance and Romero's absolutely cursed, haunting visuals, this is a fantastic example of a deeply unsettling horror film produced on a shoestring budget, having been produced for just $37,000.
