20 Best Horror Movies Since 2000
11. The House Of The Devil
Many of the 21st century horror films which pay homage to the classics from the 70s and 80s do so with tongue firmly embedded in cheek. Ti West's The House Of The Dead is an exception, fusing the haunted house and slasher genres with an affectionate sense of detail of the period.
Inspired by the "Satanic Panic" movies of the late 1970s, The House Of The Dead is an ultra low budget horror vehicle which is nevertheless hugely effective, not least on account of the strong central performances from Jocelin Donahue as the college student babysitter and Tom Noonan as the client. Noonan is the kind of actor who is creepy just by the nature of his appearance, having portayed the killer in Michael Mann's Manhunter and the infamous villain from the Schwarzenegger film Last Action Hero.
The House Of The Devil captures the grainy look and feel of old slashers, but at the same time is surprisingly adept at showing some considerable restraint, with West effectively crafting a film comparable to the likes of Rosemary's Baby. It's a slow burner, for sure, but with a chilling conclusion likely to stick in the mind.
