20 Best Horror Movies Since 2000
12. Mandy
Nicolas Cage's return to form was a long time coming: having spent much of the new century appearing in a stream of low budget, low quality thrillers he finally got his mojo back with the 2018 psychedelic horror thrill ride, Mandy.
Directed by Panos Cosmatos, whose 2010 film Beyond The Black Rainbow paid homage to the brightly saturated low budget science fiction films of the 1970s, Mandy is a film of two halves. The first introduces the titular woman (Andrea Riseborough), wife of Cage's character Red Miller, who becomes embroiled in a strange cult after being kidnapped and force-fed hallucinogenics.
The second half - spoiler alert! - is a lurid, violent and psychedelic revenge thriller, as Red Miller sets out to avenge the death of his wife after being left for dead himself by the cult. Mandy is a film which feels like a descent into Hell, full of gonzo violence, Hellraiser-inspired bikers and a sense of world building which elevates the material into the surreal. Cage's performance is a standout, complimenting Cosmatos' eye for stylish exaggeration perfectly.
Few films in modern horror history have become such instant cult classics.
