20 Best Indie Movies Of 2015

11. Bone Tomahawk

It's been a hit and miss year for genre movies in 2015, but one particular film which hammered the bullseye with confidence while simultaneously mashing up two established genres was Bone Tomahawk, S. Craig Zahler's fine horror-Western starring Kurt Russell and Patrick Wilson. After a raid on their small settlement of Bright Hope (a more inappropriate name would be hard to think up), Sheriff Franklin Hunt (Russell) sets out with a small posse including Arthur O'Dwyer (Wilson) to recover his wife from the savages who took her. Languorously paced in places, this slowness serves only to heighten the tension until the climactic confrontation with some very violent Natives. Bone Tomahawk has already gone down as the movie from 2015 featuring the most violent and disturbing death scene of the year, but it deserves to be remembered for more than this. It's a great directorial debut, a wonderful blend of two timeless movie genres, and another sign that Patrick Wilson is an actor still reaching his potential.
