20 Best Looking Movies Since 2000
5. The Revenant
If anyone had any doubts that digital cameras could bring something new to the cinematic table, these doubts were put to rest with The Revenant. While far from being the first truly exceptional-looking film to use digital, the advent of the ARRI Alexa 65 camera allowed for stunning cinematography in low light levels in a way never before seen.
Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, working with legendary cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezk, utlilised their new toys to stunning effect, capturing the remote forest-strewn mountains of North America with a level of detail not seen before. As with their previous collaboration, Birdman, the camerawork is both graceful and ostentatious, and The Revenant is full of sweeping tracking shots which capture the grandeur of the wilderness.
A special mention also goes to the CGi used in combination with animatronics for the bear rape scene, surely one of the most brutally effective sequences in recent years.
