4. There Will Be Blood
Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood explores a very different aspect of nineteenth century America than The Revenant, taking place amidst the Californian oil boom which made the fortunes of those who were prepared to cast aside morality in search of the big buck.
Featuring a sterling performance from Daniel Day Lewis (quite possibly the best of his illustrious career), it's a hefty moral tale set against a vividly realised historic backdrop, with a production design which painstakingly recreates the era. Movies with this level of scope and ambition are exactly why large format widescreen cinematography was invented, and each frame resembles a painting from one of the great masters.
Director of photography Robert Elswit has come a very long way since his early days shooting B-movie fare like Return Of The Living Dead Part II, although he isn't afraid to return to his schlocky roots. His most recent theatrical release was Skyscraper - about as far removed from There Will Be Blood as you can get.
