20 Best Looking Movies Since 2000

15. Blade Runner 2049

There Will Be Blood
Warner Bros.

Expecting anyone to live up to the visuals of the original Blade Runner is a tall order, even if today's technology should make this an easy task to accomplish (on paper, at least). It's an iconic science fiction movie which few films since its release in 1982 have come close to matching.

If any cinematographer was going to be up to the task it was Roger Deakins - and sure enough, Blade Runner 2049 more than lived up to expectations on the visual front. From the desolate expanses of dust covered deserts to the neon-drenched cityscapes, Blade Runner 2049 holds up impeccably when compared to the legacy of the original while pushing the new IMAX technology to the limits.

Deakins has worked with Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve on several projects, not least providing more striking imagery for Sicario. After 14 nominations for Best Cinematography he finally picked up his long-deserved Oscar for Blade Runner 2049.
