20 Best Looking Movies Since 2000

14. Pan's Labyrinth

There Will Be Blood
Warner Bros.

Guillermo del Toro knows a thing or two about producing cinematic eye candy - from Hellboy to Pacific Rim, his blockbusters are notable for their immaculate production design, effects and cinematography.

Pan's Labyrinth might lack the scale of spectacle found in del Toro's Hollywood tentpole movies, but it more than makes up for it with its perfectly realised fantasy realms and the creatures which lurk within it. Using only a minimal amount of computer generated imagery, Pan's Labyrinth's emphasis on animatronics and costumes ensures that the Faun and his lair feel as authentic as the nightmares in which you might expect to encounter him.

Guillermo del Toro's films can sometimes feel as if they are more style than substance, but Pan's Labyrinth is his true masterpiece, restrained when it needs to be and clearly focused on the human element, allowing the effects to sit in service to the story.
