20 Best Looking Movies Since 2000
12. Enter The Void
Gaspar Noé's Enter The Void might approach something like Spirited Away in its use of vibrant colours, but in every other respect you can think of is a wildly different cinematic beast; in Noé's words a "psychedelic melodrama" exploring life after death.
Shot almost entirely from the point of view of the protagonist Oscar, who shortly into the film gets shot by police in a drug deal gone wrong, Enter The Void follows Oscar's "soul" as he floats around the city of Tokyo, checking in on his stripper sister and flashing back to moments from his childhood.
Noé gives the film the feeling of a single take, his camerawork constantly gliding through impossible spaces, swooping over the city as Oscar's disembodied consciousness drifts closer towards the void.
Enter The Void is certainly a divisive movie (particularly for those who prefer some conventional storytelling aspects to their films) but there's no doubting Noé's unique approach to crafting "pure cinema" makes him one of the most interesting filmmakers currently working.
