20 Best Movie Blu-Rays Of 2016
19. The Witch

Every so often there comes along a horror film that not only
works within its genre, but also manages to stand on its own as a critically
adored masterpiece of cinema regardless of its horror underpinnings. This year
that movie was The Witch: a tense, psychological horror about a Puritan family
in 17th century New England that gradually unravels as black magic
and satanic forces take hold of them. It’s made all the more impressive by the
fact it’s director Robert Eggers feature debut.
Bound for classic horror status, The Witch Blu-ray is a must-have for any horror fan’s collection. Though it isn’t as crammed with extra features as some releases this year, what is included features plenty of insight into the film’s historical context and the process of first-time feature filmmaking. An audio commentary with Eggers reveals the young filmmaker as an attentive and dedicated director while a Q&A session with Eggers, star Anya Taylor-Joy and a panel of expert historians appropriately filmed in Salem, Massachusetts provides some very interesting insight into the historical authenticity of the movie.
