10. Doctor Strange – Multidimensional Trip

Arrival Amy Adams
Marvel Studios

The experience of watching Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange has been compared to an acid trip. In fact, in some scenes it’s more like being on acid while looking through a kaleidoscope and chowing down on a batch of ‘special’ brownies, and nowhere is that more true than in an epically trippy scene soon after the titular doctor’s first meeting with his mentor, the Ancient One.

After highly respected neurosurgeon Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) loses the use of his hands following a car accident, he travels to Nepal in hopes of finding a cure for but is met with the Ancient One (a skinhead Tilda Swinton) spouting stuff about astral planes and other such spiritual twaddle. Being a man of science, Doctor Strange scoffs at such ludicrous ideas but his mind is soon changed when the Ancient One kicks him into multi-dimensions to prove she is in fact not talking a load of !*$%. Cue one of the most visually mesmerising and surreal scenes in recent memory, and suddenly Doctor Strange is a believer begging to know all of the Ancient One’s secrets.
