11. The Nice Guys – Elevator Scene

Arrival Amy Adams
Warner Bros. Pictures

This year has treated us to some pretty divisive movies and Shane Black’s latest effort The Nice Guys was no different. It received heaps of praise from critics but was virtually snubbed by audiences, earning just $57.3 million on its $50 million budget which is a shame, really because it’s a great little film. Set in 1970s Los Angeles, it stars Ryan Gosling and Russel Crowe as a mismatched pair of private detectives investigating a disappearance linked to the porn industry and beyond making great use of its period setting (porn ‘taches, shag carpet and Earth, Wind & Fire on the soundtrack), there’s wonderful comedic chemistry between its two leads.

Proof of the pudding is a scene in which Gosling and Crowe are investigating a tip-off from a hotel bartender. Taking the elevator, the pair arrive at a floor only to witness two men being brutally killed and bid a hasty retreat. There’s a barely a word said or a glance exchanged between the two but the deadpan look on their faces make the scene all the more hilarious.
