20 Best Movie Moments Of 2016

A masterpiece of stop-motion puppet animation from the minds of Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson, Anomalisa charmed critics during its film festival run and went on to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature earlier this year. Weird in a typically Kaufman-esque kind of way but also touching, the film tells the tale of motivational speaker Michael (voiced by David Thewlis), a man in the middle of an existential crisis who has a brief affair with a woman, Lisa (Jennifer Jason Leigh), at a conference.

One of its most memorable moments is a sex scene between Michael and Lisa and though this might conjure flashbacks of that rather graphic puppet sex scene from Team America: World Police, Anomalisa’s R-rated scene is about as far from that as you can get. The amount of work alone that went into crafting such a scene is staggering and, oddly enough, it’s made all the more real and intimate precisely because it’s happening between puppets rather than actors in the flesh.
