14. Hardcore Henry – Exploding Head

Arrival Amy Adams
STX Entertainment

A non-stop joyride of violence and gore inspired by first-person shooter games and shot almost entirely from a POV perspective, it’s probably not too surprising Ilya Naishuller’s feature debut Hardcore Henry was one of the year’s most divisive movies. Following the titular Henry, a cybernetically resurrected man-robot, as he battles to save his kidnapped scientist wife from a telekinetic Russian warlord, it’s an insane and dizzying piece of cinema that’s certainly not for the weak of stomach. In terms of sheer innovation though, it deserves all the praise it can get.

Did we mention it was violent? There’s around 230 deaths throughout the movie but one of its goriest and best features Henry apprehending his opponent Slick Dmitry who, just as he’s about to give up some vital information, is shot by a sniper causing his head to explode in grisly, graphically close-up fashion. Gross but legendary.
