If there's any performance this year that's going to be the most egregiously snubbed for awards, it's Daniel Johns' heartbreaking turn as an ill man trying to get back to work in Ken Loach's infuriating social drama.

Loach's film isn't subtle in the slightest in its condemnation of the UK government's treatment of its ill, so it's all the more impressive that Johns' performance still feels real and grounded, resulting in a devastating account of how the social welfare system can fail the most vulnerable in society.

Johns ensures the title character isn't a pitiable sort, though: he's full of life and drips with humanity, which makes his situation all the more upsetting. Hopefully this won't be the last we see of Johns on screen, because he's got too much talent not to make the most of it.
