4. Ben Foster - Hell Or High Water
Ben Foster is no stranger to playing unhinged characters, yet his bank robber Tanner is a little different, imbued with a depth that makes his actions believable even when things get a little more action-orientated in the neo-western's third act.
Foster manages to be both hilarious and terrifying thanks to the palpable chemistry between himself and screen brother Chris Pine (who also does a great job here), and the sheer unpredictability that he could explode into possibly PTSD-induced violence rage at any moment.
He's probably going to struggle to get the major awards love he deserves (though the Independent Spirit Award nomination was nice), once again proving him to be one of the most under-appreciated actors working today.
