20 Best Movie Performances Of 2016
18. John Goodman - 10 Cloverfield Lane
John Goodman gave arguably the performance of his career as bats*** crazy survivalist Howard Stambler in this tripwire-tense Cloverfield spin-off.
Far from a simplistic creep, Goodman makes fantastic use of a slow-burn script to gradually build tension, transforming Howard from a firm but possibly benevolent man into an undeniable monster by film's end...even if he ends up being both crazy and right.
Goodman's quiet intensity results in one of the year's most terrifying performances, proving far more effective than just about any of 2016's horror movie creatures.
It proves that sometimes these minimalist exercises can bring the best out in actors, even those with resumes as accomplished as Goodman's.
