20 Best Movie Performances Of 2017

7. Timothee Chalamet – Call Me By Your Name

Call Me By Your Name Armie Hammer
Sony Pictures Classics

There are few dramas this year as emotionally powerful, gorgeous and tough to forget as Luca Guadagnino's sumptuous Italian romance Call Me By Your Name.

Rising young star Timothée Chalamet, best known to audiences for playing Murph's brother in Interstellar, gives a marvellous performance as 17-year-old American Elio, who falls in love with his father's visiting grad student Oliver (Armie Hammer) over the course of 1983's summer.

Guadagnino's tender direction gives Chalamet and Hammer's screen relationship time to gradually build and flourish, with Chalamet perfectly conveying the full impact of life's first love, encompassing the breathless highs and crushing lows.

The film's final shot, focused entirely on Chalamet's face, is one of the most brilliantly haunting images shot all year, providing the devastating capper to an Oscar-worthy performance.
