20 Best Movie Performances Of 2017

8. Holly Hunter - The Big Sick

Holly Hunter hasn't exactly been up to her neck in prestigious roles recently, so it was a huge relief to see her turn in one of the best performances of her career in this summer's indie comedy The Big Sick, playing comatose Emily's (Zoe Kazan) feisty mother Beth.

It's not a big, loud performance like many of the sort that win awards, but Hunter cements both the fiery concern and overwhelming heartbreak surely felt by any parent dealing with the health crisis of her child.

Her interactions with both her screen husband Terry (Ray Romano) and Emily's ex-boyfriend Kumail (Kumail Nanjiani) are alternately hilarious and heartfelt, and will most certainly score her a fifth Oscar nomination.
