Andy Serkis once again confirms himself to be a master of performance capture with his astonishing final performance as ape leader Caesar in War for the Planet of the Apes.

Though the debate rages on about where his performance ends and the digital wizardry begins, it's clear from watching behind-the-scenes footage that much of Serkis' physical performance is translated wholesale into the final visage of the character, ensuring he's not merely providing Caesar with a fantastic voice.

Considering that War is the most emotional and harrowing of the three Apes movies, it asks Serkis to go to some incredibly dark places, and in conjunction with Weta Digital's VFX necromancy, delivers a mind-boggling creation that's virtually indistinguishable from an actual, tangible actor.

Serkis won't be nominated for anything, but his fantastic work at least reignites the debate about performance capture, and again has his fans campaigning for him to receive a well-earned Honorary Oscar for his boundary-pushing efforts.
