20 Best Movie Performances Of 2018

11. Yalitza Aparicio (Roma)

Roma Film
Netflix

Yalitza Aparicio had never acted before appearing in Alfonso Cuarón's stirring new Best Picture front-runner, yet her brilliantly subdued performance as an overworked maid struggling to find her place in 1970s Mexico is one of the year's most evocative and unforgettable.

Aparicio's eyes have a haunting quality to them that Cuarón zeroes in on at every opportunity, utilising his awards-worthy framing to say a lot without actually having Aparicio speak all that much at all.

There are at least two marquee scenes in this movie that, for different reasons, are extremely tough to shake, and without such a quiet yet heartbreaking portrayal of dignity under pressure, it wouldn't be so startlingly effective.
