20 Best Movie Performances Of 2018
10. Matt Dillon (The House That Jack Built)
The divisive nature of Lars von Trier's new psychological horror will prevent Matt Dillon from receiving many - if any - gold statues this awards season, but make no mistake, his turn as deranged serial killer Jack is one of the year's most daring and tough to shake.
Despite the darkly comic tenor of von Trier's script and direction, Dillon plays the role completely straight, which at once elevates both the deadpan comedy and the bone-chilling terror of the central character study.
There aren't a lot of scenes for Dillon to explode into violent rages, with him instead opting for a subdued eeriness which gives way to shockingly detached, methodical depictions of murder.
Few actors could pull this character off with this much restraint, and Dillon deserves heaps of credit for wrestling with one of the most challenging acting tasks of the year.
