20 Best Movie Performances Of 2018
1. Toni Collette (Herditary)
As superb as these 20 performances were, however, not one of them can quite live up to Toni Collette's barnstorming turn as a bereaved daughter and mother in Ari Aster's Hereditary.
The under-appreciated Collette confirms herself to be one of the finest actors of her generation with an anguish-filled performance that hits in the gut and clings to the bones.
There are too many standout scenes here to count, though the post-party "discovery" scene and the "I am your mother!" dinner table argument surely embedded themselves deep into the psyche of anyone who saw them.
Horror films are of course massively handicapped at the Oscars, so in what's sure to be the worst awards injustice this year, she'll likely go without even a nomination despite offering up the most poignant, deeply-felt performance of 2018.
