16. Glenn Close (The Wife)

If there was an award for "Best Performance In A Totally OK Movie", Glenn Close would surely win it for her spellbinding work in The Wife.

But as this will be her seventh Oscar nomination without yet scoring a win, it's safe to say that she's most definitely a front-runner to win the Best Actress Oscar outright.

It's a shame that Close is most likely going to take home the gold for a pretty standard, milquetoast drama, but her performance here is so damn great regardless that it's hard to be too mad about it.

As the long-suffering wife of a supposedly brilliant writer (Jonathan Pryce), Close does most of her acting throughout the movie with her face, though she nails the inevitably volcanic eruption also.

Now in her fifth decade in the industry, Close once again proves she's one of our finest living actresses, classing-up an otherwise dead-average drama with her incredible work.
