10. Delroy Lindo - Da 5 Bloods

Aubrey Plaza Black Bear
Netflix

Though Spike Lee's new war film is mostly concerned with its perfectly cast ensemble, there's one performance that clearly rises above the rest, and that's Delroy Lindo's turn as PTSD-afflicted Vietnam War veteran Paul.

Lindo gives easily the strongest performance of his storied career as a man deeply affected by not only his time at war but the day-to-day experience of being a black man in America.

True to form for Lee, he gives Lindo the opportunity to talk directly to the audience in an unforgettable late-film monologue, and one which immediately made the actor a major Oscar theat.

It's incredibly easy for actors depicting troubled war vets to fall into performative cliches, but Lindo creates a towering, singular picture of the spiritual toll that violence can generate.
