20 Best Movie Performances Of 2020

5. Gary Oldman - Mank

Aubrey Plaza Black Bear
Netflix

Gary Oldman may have won a long-deserved Best Actor Oscar for his scenery-chewing performance as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, but with David Fincher's Mank he found a vessel to channel the truly strongest work of his incredible career.

As booze-soaked Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, Oldman commands the screen in every moment, making the most of Jack Fincher's acid-tongued dialogue and ensuring Mank is as charming as he is thoroughly questionable.

Oldman's grandstanding scene is obviously his climactic interruption of a dinner party, delivering a storming stream-of-consciousness monologue for the ages, and no matter what you make of the film's loose treatment of historical fact, Oldman's work is absolutely beyond reproach.
