20 Best Movie Performances Of 2020

4. Jessie Buckley - I'm Thinking Of Ending Things

Aubrey Plaza Black Bear
Netflix

By far the best performance this year likely to be snubbed by the Academy, Jessie Buckley's turn as the mysterious young woman at the core of Charlie Kaufman's mind-bending drama ensures her skyrocket to stardom continues unabated.

Even those who find Kaufman's twisted, ambiguous narrative too impenetrable for its own good can surely appreciate the brilliance of Buckley's turn as a downtrodden woman questioning her relationship with sad sack Jake (Jesse Plemons).

Buckley's darkly hilarious, deliciously dour performance makes her a perfect fit for Kaufman's dramatic sensibilities, and though the film as a whole is likely too off-kilter to satisfy major awards bodies, Buckley's swinging-for-the-fences work absolutely deserves to be recognised.
