20 Best Movie Performances Of 2020

19. Sarah Paulson - Run

Aubrey Plaza Black Bear
Lionsgate

Sarah Paulson adds another terrific performance to her growing cachet in Aneesh Chaganty's deliciously twisted thriller Run, playing Diane Sherman, an overprotective mother who may or may not harbour a dark secret or two.

Much of the film's success rests on the slow-burn ambiguity of Paulson's performance: for a good while we're never quite sure exactly how far things are going to go, the actress teetering on a razor's edge to keep the audience in a state of high anxiety.

And impressively, even when things get more outlandish later on, Paulson never makes Diane a cartoonish caricature: she brings a grounded aspect to the character at all times.

It's the sort of brilliantly played genre role that the Golden Globes typically loves to nominate.
