It's easy to imagine how, with a different script and director, the character of actress Marion Davies (Amanda Seyfried) in David Fincher's Mank could've seemed like a walking, talking stereotype.

But Marion is a far more complex figure than her striking starlet visage first implies, giving Seyfried the floor to give the strongest performance of her career, and one sure to net her her first Oscar nomination next year.

Seyfried's scenes opposite Gary Oldman's Herman J. Mankewicz are some of the film's most memorable, the pair exhibiting a chemistry few would've ever expected, in large part thanks to a Seyfried performance just ambiguous enough - warm and jovial on the surface, but also clearly guarded to an extent.
