20 Best Movie Performances Of 2021
15. Emilia Jones - CODA
Another film that many are hoping might secure some surprise Oscar nominations next year is Sian Heder's fantastic coming-of-age drama CODA, which follows Ruby Rossi (Emilia Jones), the only hearing member of a deaf family as she comes to a major crossroads in her life.
Jones, a Welsh actress primarily known for her performance in Netflix's Locke and Key, is outstanding as Ruby, pulling off the triple threat of nailing an American accent, touting a belter of a singing voice (which she received training for), and speaking American Sign Language (which she spent nine months learning before shooting).
The result is a performance that feels completely lived-in and should be courting Best Actress Oscar consideration, because it's a staggeringly demanding role for any young actor.
While she'll probably end up missing out on Oscar recognition, the role is sure to make Jones a thoroughly in-demand talent moving forward.
