The tagline: ‘An adventure 65 million years in the making.’

Another Spielberg classic and another great tagline, albeit one that’s somewhat specious.

For while it’s true that many of the dinosaurs that inhabited the famous fictional park roamed the Earth some 65 million years ago, that would place them firmly in the Cretaceous period.

But ‘Cretaceous Park’ just doesn’t have the same ring to it, and some of the dinosaur species that featured in author Michael Crichton’s novel and its subsequent film adaptation – the Stegosaurus being one – were actually from the Jurassic era.

Jack Horner, a paleontologist who consulted on Jurassic Park and served as partial inspiration for the Alan Grant character played by Sam Neill, has weighed in on the reasons behind the film’s misnomer:

“The reason is the animals that sort of typify dinosaurs are ones that have lots of accoutrements like spikes, horns, shields and so on, and so most of the ones with those kind of accoutrements are from the Cretaceous."
