The tagline used for David Fincher’s sixth outing as director could just as easily have been used for his most recent feature Gone Girl, but it might have given the game away a little.
Zodiac, which charts cartoonist-cum-investigator Robert Graysmith’s (Jake Gyllenhaal) attempts to unmask the man behind the infamous murders that occurred in and around the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1960s and 1970s, was as perfect a match of director and source material as you’re likely to find.
Fincher’s legendary attention to detail and commitment to each frame of every film is mirrored in Graysmith’s own obsession, which lasted decades and cost him his marriage.
One suspects Fincher would accuse him of not putting in enough effort.
