Another film with strong countercultural links is Stanley Kubrick’s psychedelic opus 2001: A Space Odyssey.

For critics and audiences alike, it was hard to know what to make of Kubrick’s extraordinary sci-fi touchstone at first glance, but by the end of its theatrical run 2001: A Space Odyssey had become the highest-grossing film of 1968.

When MGM latched on to the fact that college-age moviegoers were lining up in droves to watch Kubrick’s masterpiece again and again, the tagline was changed from ‘An epic drama of adventure and exploration’ to ‘The ultimate trip.’

We can’t imagine why.
