You might do well to take American Beauty’s tagline to heart; after all, it worked for Alan Ball.
Although the screenwriter would go on to create HBO’s twin triumphs Six Feet Under and True Blood, it was his frustrations as a jobbing scribe for network television that would prompt him to explore feature ideas.
Ball pitched his agent three projects, two of which were safe romantic comedies and the third a searing satire of suburbia. Ball’s agent opined that he should pursue the idea he felt most passionate about, which the writer described as “probably the best advice I've ever gotten in my career.”
Ball would see his efforts rewarded with an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay to go with the four other Academy Awards deservedly won by American Beauty, including a Best Director gong for Sam Mendes on his feature film debut.
