20 Best Movies About The Movies Of All Time

19. Hail, Caesar

Hail Cesare
Universal Pictures

In classic Coen Brothers fashion, Hail, Caesar is a jumbled assortment of plotlines that are overcomplicated by the idiotic characters that populate the narrative. In the same vein as Burn After Reading and Intolerable Cruelty, this film satirically pokes fun at the comedic foolishness of whatever is happening on screen to an overall successful effect.

The plot follows Eddie Mannix, a Hollywood fixer in the 1950s who goes around solving problems for the studio he works for. After marquee actor Baird Whitlock disappears, Mannix has to do everything in his power to find him while balancing the usual problems presented to him by difficult stars and aggravated directors.

The film boasts a fantastic cast with several of the best roles being filled with glorified cameos from Jonah Hill, Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes. Josh Brolin and George Clooney lead the comedy (as Mannix and Whitlock respectively) and their experience as Coen veterans shines through here.

Despite some hilarious caricatures of Golden Age Hollywood figures, this falls into the middle of the Coen's catalogue as a film that could have been better. But it is still worth seeing as a subpar Coen Brothers film is still better than most other films out there.
