David Mamet's black comedy of a film in pre-production is a great representation of the uncontrollable aspects that filmmaking can provide. Most films about making movies usually just cover the on set antics and filming process, rarely is pre-production given its time to shine as one of the most chaotic times in the cycle of any film.

The film crew sets up shop in a small rural town who are ready and willing to forsake their dignity and throw themselves at the production. Everything that can go wrong does go wrong with problematic stars, re-writes, scandals and financial woes providing ample problems for the production.

The cast is great with good performances from Philip Seymour Hoffman and Alec Baldwin but it is William H. Macy (who plays the film's director) that is the standout here. As each new problem arises, Macy is mercurial as he attempts to play everyone's best friend and keep the troubled production on track while tackling a multitude of issues.
