If Darren Aronofsky hadn’t already established himself as the provocateur du jour, he certainly did with his new horror Mother! Undoubtedly one of the most controversial films of 2017, it was the kind of movie that divided audiences – who dismissed it as deliberately provocative, self-indulgent arthouse tosh – and critics, who thought it a daring religious allegory.

Of course, it didn’t help that Mother! features a scene in which an infant child – and one that’s a metaphor for Jesus, no less – has his neck broken with a blood-curdling and very audible snap by a crowd of bloodthirsty zealots who then proceed to eat him. Yes, you read that correctly.

Naturally, a scene involving the gory death of one so young was bound to get people’s backs up and that it did. While it’s definitely a controversial scene and undeniably designed to push people’s buttons, it’s one movie moment that got us all talking however gruesome and shocking it was.
