14. Baby Driver – The Opening Getaway
The importance of a good opening scene is undeniable: it’s
got to captivate your audience or you run the risk of boring them in the first
instance. For a successful opening sequence, look no further than Edgar
Wright’s car chase movie Baby Driver.
In its blistering first few moments we’re introduced to its young protagonist Baby (Ansel Elgort) – a getaway driver with tremendous car control skills and a love of good music – working a bank heist transporting robbers Jon Bernthal, Jon Hamm and Eiza González from the scene of the crime which is when the action really kicks in.
Zooming through the streets of downtown Atlanta with the police in hot pursuit, Baby manoeuvres his car with effortless cool to the tune of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion song Bellbottoms. There’s no dialogue but rather an emphasis on the action and the squeal of rubber on tarmac as the car glides and slides along the city streets like it’s performing a choreographed dance.
A breath-taking and brilliantly composed scene that’s a treat to watch and proves car chases and a cracking soundtrack are definitely a winning combination.
