20 Best Movies Of 2017
8. Get Out
Prior to 2017, Jordan Peele was best known for his comedy sketches alongside Keegan-Michael Key, which makes his directorial debut even more impressive. It may be considered as a comedy by the Golden Globes, and there are funny moments in the film, but it showcases the true horrors of 2017 in spectacular fashion.
It's a socially conscious and politically savvy movie, with a voice that needs to be heard and yet is never preachy. It's not about the obvious racism that we see, but the kind of casual racism that's often hidden away and people try to defend, and is, in many ways, even more terrifying.
Get Out is an uncomfortable film that's designed to make you squirm, but it's also terrifically entertaining. The storyline is enthralling, the humour perfectly-pitched and well-placed, and Daniel Kaluuya becomes the latest Skins alum to make the leap to the big leagues with a stirring performance, with a strong supporting cast to share in the terror.
Peele shows off a surprising grasp of the horror genre, gradually building tension, psychological terror, and expertly pacing the scares, and its greatest strength is how it blends the racial elements into that, and perhaps no 2017 film better captures the zeitgeist than this.
