After 17 years and nine films, we had to say goodbye to High Jackman's Wolverine. It's hard to think of a more fitting farewell than Logan, a superhero movie like no other.

Fox explored the potential of R-rated comic book movies with Deadpool, but it's with Logan that they perfect the form. James Mangold and Jackman had already teamed-up for one largely solid solo outing, but takes things up a good few notches here. It's so visceral and violent that it really earns that R-rating, but it's never done just for the sake of it. Instead, it all serves the story and character, and helps tell a surprisingly poignant tale about family and grief.

The action beats, which finally allow Jackman to cut loose, are sensational, but the emotional blows are even heavier thanks to the performances of him and Patrick Stewart, whose bond adds a lot of weight to the film. Only furthering that is Dafne Keen's Laura, who is one hell of a find and blends raw intensity with childlike wonder and vulnerability.

It is extremely bleak, for the scorched-Earth post-apocalyptic setting to the pain and suffering felt by the characters, but finds room for a startling amount of humanity as well, giving us not only the best X-movie to date, but one of the best comic book movies of all time.
