16. My Life As A Courgette

Changed to Courgette from the U.S.-released Zucchini, but whatever you call it the title suggests a silly, lighthearted kids film - and that's not at all what My Life As A Courgette/Zucchini is.

Yes, there are some cute character designs and a story that'll appeal to people of all ages, but it runs much deeper than vegetable-themed nicknames. This serves as a rumination on the death of a parent, bullying and abuse, and self-discovery in a startling way, and one made bolder by its striking animation choice.

The film could quite easily be too silly, or conversely be bogged down in its heavy themes, but it strikes a wonderful balance. It's desperately sad at times and has some very important messages, but it also does so with humour, heart, and shows us how to find light in the darkness.
